Green Action Plan
As we move from our present location in Temescal Gateway Park to our new location in Santa Monica, Little Dolphins will strive to create a green community that recognizes the interconnectedness of all living systems. We are a school where mutual respect and concern for our world is translated into action. Consistent with our mission of environmental education we are executing an adaptive re-use of the existing building from its current use to one appropriate for early childhood education. It is our hope that by modeling the principles of ecology to our children at a very early age they will develop a deep understanding and sense of responsibility for the environment.
Our outdoor space is designed to be an outdoor classroom and we are fortunate to have a large space that lends itself to environmental learning and play. Young children learn through process and play and by creating an outside space with a bike path, a secure climbing area, a swing set, raised agricultural beds, a sand box and outside art play, the children will acquire developmentally appropriate physical and social skills. We will be placing new trees around the yard to provide shade and more oxygen. A raised bed edible garden will provide an example of a managed ecosystem. Students will gain hands on experience in the garden and learn the origins of food and all living systems. Students and teachers will work together to shape and plant beds, amend soil, turn compost and harvest flowers, fruits and vegetables. The learning is continued in the kitchen as the children will prepare and eat foods grown in the gardens. Along with a composting and recycling program there will be cisterns for rain harvesting for irrigation of the grass field, trees and other plants.
Teaching ecological literacy is one of the most important roles in educating the next generation and by creating these programs for preschool age children they gain awareness at an impressionable age of their part in a sustainable community.
